Live Sand

           Caribsea Aragamax Sand - $1.99 / lb.

****We have a minimum purchase amount.  Since we grow our live sand in our systems, when selling the live sand we sell it from our trays.  You must take the entire content of the tray which ranges in weight from 4-7 pounds per tray.

Currently we have just Caribsea Aragamax Aquacultured Live sand.  All of our live sand available for sale has been in our Coral grow out systems for a minimum of 3-6 months.  We culture this sand in our 2,000 gallon systems under natural sunlight and amongst all of the live rock and corals.  This allows a large diversity of animals, invertebrates and beneficial bacteria to culture into the sand.   The result is a very biologically diverse sand that is ready to help you in creating a much more natural and balanced ecosystem for your aquarium at a fraction of the cost.

Question: How much live sand should I use?

Answer: There are a number of answers to this question:

1. When starting up your aquarium you can use 100% live sand.  This is the most expensive way to seed your system, but the results can be much more dramatic because the animals are already there and ready to help the biological system.

2. You can use a 50/50 combination of live sand to non-living sand. By mixing the two together (seeding the sand) you save money, and the live sand will convert the non-living sand into live sand over a shorter period of time as the biological bacteria and the living organisms multiply and reproduce.

3. You can use nothing but non-living sand, as all sand eventually becomes live over time. However, starting from scratch does take much longer for the cylcing process to take place and oftentimes you will notice that algaes and other nutrients tend to build up on the sand much more rapidly.

4. You can use live sand to jump start or boost your existing sand bed and to reintroduce more diversity into your existing aquarium.

5. No matter what you decide to do there is no doubt that adding whatever amount of live sand you choose will benefit your system that much more.  Any amount will be better than nothing. If you have a new aquarium and are just starting up the biological cycling process, or one still in the process of completing its cycle, the seeding method can be used to kick start or aid in the speeding up of this process. For an aquarium that has been running for some time, seeding can also enhance the strength of its existing biological filter and encourage bio diversity.
